EU LCS Summer Split Week 1 Preview: Giants & Vitality
Posted 2016-06-01 Lepertum
Now that June has come around it’s time to get back to work for the Fnatic League of Legends squad. The upcoming Summer Split features a brand new best-of-two format, lots of roster changes and the return of YellOwStaR! Let’s take a look at our first matchups.
Fnatic vs Giants - Thursday 9PM CEST
Giants was the team that struggled the most during the Spring Split. Several roster changes made for a hard time trying to find good team synergy, resulting in a 3-15 split. Because of their performance, Giants was forced to play in the Summer Promotion tournament where they showed much-improved form. They went up against challenger teams Copenhagen Wolves and Huma, beating them in order to re-qualify for the LCS. After that, however, Giants announced the replacement of xPePii and Wisdom by Maxlore and Night, leaving the team once again with a new roster for the Summer Split.
When Fnatic went up against Giants last split we won both games. In fact, looking back at the history between our two teams, Fnatic has yet to lose a single game against Giants in the LCS. This by itself, of course, is no reason for overconfidence but the return of YellOwStaR and the already existing synergy he has with Rekkles and Febiven works in our favor whereas Giants has to start over (again).
Last split we played our first game against Origen. We won the game but things could have gone either way. This split, though, the first two games are most likely ours to lose.
Fnatic vs Vitality - Friday 7PM CEST
Our first real trial by combat starts on Friday when we go up against Vitality. In the regular season, Vitality had our number, defeating us each time we went up against them. During playoffs, however, the roles were reversed and Fnatic won convincingly with a 3-1 scoreline.
Vitality replaced two members since the playoffs. Shook and Hjärnan left the team and their spots got filled by Korean players MightyBear and Police. While MightyBear is a rather unknown player, Police has managed to qualify for the NA LCS with Apex Gaming after a successful run in the NACS. The true power of the team is hard to judge right now but it’ll definitely be an exciting matchup for Fnatic and Vitality fans. This series could very well set the tone for the rest of the split as both teams will be looking to prove that they are the better squad coming out of the mid-season break.
Matchup of the week: YellOwStaR vs. kaSing
With the return of YellOwStaR to Europe, all eyes will be on him, making it easy to pick our favorite matchup of the week. Both YellOwStaR and kaSing started out their careers in Europe before making the transition to North America to play for TSM. Both of them also returned to Europe with a ton of extra knowledge and experience, ready to take their new (old?) team to the next level.
It’ll definitely be interesting to find out if the kaSing-effect will remain in full force for Vitality when these two players go up against each other in the bot lane. They both have an incredible skill set and will be very evenly matched so it might just be up to their AD Carry to make the difference.
