IPL4 Coverage: aLive is the Champion
After an absolutely amazing run, Fnatic aLive has become Champion of IPL4! He is $40,000 richer and has a title under his belt that includes decisive victories over top Korean Protoss, Terran, and Zerg players. aLive defeated Polt, GanZi, TAiLS, PartinG, MKP, NesTea, and Squirtle! That's an absurd line up of Code S players, all of whom had to bow to aLive. 2012 has seen aLive win a number of smaller tournaments, like the RaidCall Invitation #2 and the NASL Season 3 Qualifier, but this is a huge LAN event against a pool of players that rivals any GSL Code S. The day has been a marathon for our terrific Terran player, but he came out on top of the world!
The fourth season of IGN Pro League is right around the corner and this year three of our Starcraft 2 players are competing in it. This season will probably be one of the most exciting ones as several Koreans as well as the best Europeans are either trying to qualify through the open bracket or already qualified for the groupstage.
This year's IGN Pro League will be bigger than the previous ones. With a record prize pool of $100,000 the tournament is one of the biggest in 2012. The venue for this season will be the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas and the tournament will take place between 6th and 8th April.
LIVE UPDATES FROM IPL4:
09:00: As the clock strikes midnight in Las Vegas, Fnatic aLive is crowned Champion of IPL 4!
08:35: The third map is going to be Daybreak and if aLive wins, he'll take first place and $40,000. aLive begins with early pressure again, using his micro to distract Squirtle and delay mining on some Probes. aLive has three Barracks pumping out Marines and started a Factory as soon as he scouts Squirtle's base, seeing just two Gateways. The Factory gets a reactor so that aLive can swap it with a Starport and begin making Medivacs. The first two Medivacs are used for a double drop, catching many of the Protoss units out of position. Squirtle reacts well, but aLive is still able to do some damage before being chased out. Squirtle has finished begun +2/+2 upgrades, blink, and Colossi tech while aLive is starting his third Command Center and starts to upgrade his bio units. aLive's third base is operational before Squirtle's is, but aLive needs to do damage before Squirtle can get up the death ball that he has used with great success this whole tournament. The drops continue pulling Squirtle's units around, but aLive just lost a full Medivac to blink Stalkers. With double reactored Starports, aLive has been able to produce a large number of Vikings. The armies collide, and aLive is able to hold off the Protoss force. Continued blink Stalker pressure is enough to break the aLive's third base and his army, but aLive is stick around as his upgrades finish. with Medivacs and Marauders against blink Stalkers and charge Zealots, the fighting is fierce and close. aLive has finally pushed Squirtle back, and immediately loads up into Medivacs and drops a ton of units into the undefended main. By focus firing the Pylons, aLive has destroyed the production facilities and TAKES THE GRAND FINALS!
08:25: The second map is Sanshorn Mists, selected by Squirtle. aLive opens with a Barracks and a Factory, taking two quick gases which allow him to do any sort of tech he wants. Squirtle is hiding a Twilight Council before he expands, followed immediately by a Dark Shrine. aLive has started making cloaked Banshees, so it will be a race of cloaked units. aLive scans and kills off the Dark Templar before Squirtle can stop the cloaked Banshees and he takes the second game, ahead 2-0!
08:15: As this tournament is Double Elimination, the Grand Finals is now in its second Best of 5 and the first map is Cloud Kingdom. Squirtle goes Nexus first as aLive hides a proxy Barracks for a double Barracks early pressure. It is scouted by Squirtle, and aLive starts a Bunker that requires Squirtle to pull a lot of Probes to defend it. Extra SCVs from aLive allows the first Bunker to finish and gives aLive the chance to set up another one, punishing the greedy build from Squirtle. aLive's early pressure is too much for Squirtle, taking the first game and starting off the second series 1-0!
07:50: This first (and potentially only) Best of 5 has come down to the fifth game, to be played on Antiga Shipyard, a map good for multipronged drops that aLive loves so much. aLive has a Command Center, three Barracks, and two gas to build up his early game infrastructure. aLive spots a Probe trying to hide at his third and is able to destroy the pylon before the Protoss army arrives, giving him time to build Bunkers at the ramp to his Natural. aLive has begun producing Medivacs, but the Gateway units push up and break the Terran front before Medivacs arrive. He is forced to withdraw from the natural and Squirtle attempts to push up the front. Bottled up as he is, aLive sends a Medivac full of units up to the Protoss base but it doesn't look good for aLive at his main. Squirtle takes the first Best of 5 with a score of 3-2, forcing another series!
07:00: The third map will be played on Cloud Kingdom. aLive opens with a gasless expansion that he follows up with 5 Barracks for a lot of Marine pressure. aLive is able to scout Squirtle's base fully and sees that Squirtle is unprepared for his aggression. With a number of Marines, aLive is able to apply serious pressure to Squirtle, killing both Proves and army units. After applying a lot of pressure, aLive begins his third Command Center a little after 9 minutes giving him the chance to really push for the economic advantage. After allowing aLive to see two forges being started, Squirtle cancelled and switched to Colossi tech and an aggressive 6 Warp Gates, possibly catching aLive off guard. aLive has continued to upgrade his bio army and spots the Protoss moving out as his Viking production starts up to counter the Protoss deathball. With good forcefields, Squirtle is able to segment aLive's army and deal massive damage. A desperation drop from aLive in Squirtle's main is unable to do enough damage and Squirtle takes the third game. Squirtle is 1-2 and forces a fourth game in the first (and perhaps only) best of 5.
06:35: The second map is Daybreak, chosen by Squirtle. A hidden Barracks opening from aLive is scouted by Squirtle, giving him a chance to deflect the two Barracks opening. aLive chooses to fly the proxy Barracks home and start a Command Center in his natural expansion. aLive follows up with a cloaked Banshee and catches sight of Squirtle's forces moving out. This gives him the chance to start extra bunkers before the engagement begins, and this proves essential - it buys him time to get a cloaked Banshee into Squirtle's mineral line AND have one at home to help hold off the push. At the 12 minute mark, aLive has a 15 harvester lead and is sending in two cloaked Banshees to the Protoss main as he begins construction on a third Command Center. aLive pokes at all sides, with drops and Banshees and groups of Marines to harass the main and deny the third. A Raven gets sent behind the Protoss mineral lines and drops a couple of auto-turrets, forcing Squirtle to move his units out of position as aLive attempts an enormous drop. The whole force drops as aLive forces another group between the third and the natural, cutting the Protoss in half and taking the second game. aLive is now one game away from winning the Grand Finals and $40,000!
06:15: The first map is Sanshorn Mists. aLive is able to spot Squirtle's proxy Stargate and Squirtle is forced to cancel it at the 5 minute mark. This leaves him supply blocked and behind in tech, giving aLive the confidence to build a quick Command Center at his natural. Knowing that Squirtle had very few units, aLive pushed with a group of Marines and is able to punish Squirtel, destroying many units and the Protoss's Nexus at the natural. Sensing weakness, aLive continues pushing bio units against the Protoss natural, trying to catch Squirtle before his upgrades and economy can kick in. With superior macro and great micro, aLive was able to pressure Squirtle into bad decisions and force the GG, starting the Grand Finals with a 1-0 lead!
06:15: Fnatic aLive will be going up against Squirtle in the Grand Finals, it's live and you can cheer for aLive here! Because aLive is coming from the Winner's Bracket and the tournament is Double Elimination, it means that Squirtle has to win two Best of 5 series against aLive in order to win. With $40,000 on the line, aLive has bought himself an extra series with his fantastic play!
06:00: The loser brackets semifinals went down to the wire, with Squirtle going up 2-0 and NesTea coming back to tie it 2-2. The fifth game had to be re-gamed, and finally Squirtle took it 3-2. aLive will now face him in the Grand Finals.
03:30: The fourth map was Metropolis, a large map chosen by Zerg for the potential early third base. The terrain of the map made aLive decide to go with a Reaper opening for cliff abuse and to force a lot of early Zerglings from NesTea. aLive made a transition into Blue Flame Hellions for added map control against NesTea's Zerglings. Using Blue Flame Hellions at one entrance and a drop of Marines at another, aLive was able to take out most of the Zerg units with good micro. NesTea made a Mutalisk switch as aLive began dropping in Zerg bases, sometimes cleaned up by NesTea and sometimes doing significant damage to the Drone and Mutalisk numbers. NesTea's incredible Mutalisk harass began again, forcing turrets out of aLive as his new third base now required protection. aLive also began producing Thors in an attempt to rely on fewer turrets, and with the knowledge that NesTea's units were out of place, he regained the confidence to begin dropping again. Excellent Marine splits made for incredibly inefficient Baneling losses. Absolutely amazing micro out of aLive, but the follow up Zergling run-by did a lot of damage to the Terran economy, denying the third. The appearance of Infestors changed the game, preventing aLive from spreading his Marines. 22 minutes saw the arrival of Broodlords and aLive was forced to push into Zerg territory. The Marine/Siege Tank/Medivac ball was a desperation move by aLive, but it has done incredible damage to NesTea, possibly proving to be a mistake by the Zerg. With great Marine control against NesTea, aLive was able to force NesTea out of the game. aLive is going on to the grand finals!
03:15: The third map was Sanshorn Mists, chosen by aLive, who hid a second Barracks from NesTea and began immediately applying pressure with forward Bunkers and multiple Marines. By drawing all of his Drones and making a lot of early Zerglings, NesTea was able to hold off the quick double Bunker pressure. Despite that, aLive had a significant worker lead as aLive began his second Command Center and NesTea began making Drones from two Hatcheries. aLive began making Blue Flame Hellions and started towards a heavy mech combination as a small group of Marines worked to deny NesTea any map presence. NesTea made a force of Banelings and Roaches to broach aLive's wall, but aLive had just too many units and took the third map. aLive up, 2-1!
02:45: The second map was Daybreak and the players started in cross positions. The map was chosen by NesTea because he lost the first game, and aLive placed his first barracks on the low ground for a slightly closer rally and the chance to snipe an unsuspecting Overlord. aLive made a quick Command Center at his natural, showing his confidence and allowing for a quicker expansion. NesTea dropped a third Hatchery at 5 minutes, which is risky if scouted but would pay off if it went unpunished for very long. aLive made a timing push around the 8 minute mark, after his Marines had stim but before NesTea was able to get up many Roaches or Banelings. After posturing at the third base and forcing units from NesTea instead of Drones, aLive did a double Medivac drop into the main, which took out the Spawning Pool and did some economic damage before retreating with the majority of his Marines intact. As NesTea has Mutalisks out, aLive was forced to be more cautious with his drops but continued forcing NesTea to reposition his troops. As NesTea takes out aLive's third base, a drop from the Fnatic Terran was able to destroy NesTea's fourth base. A huge engagement immediately after that showed brilliant micro and positioning by aLive, which killed off all of NesTea's Banelings and gave aLive the advantage in army size. NesTea's response was to mass Banelings and was able to take out a number of Siege Tanks, but the Marine/Thor push was able to continue pushing into NesTea's territory before being pushed back by the Mutalisk and Baneling mass. Through some exceptional Medivac micro, aLive was able to keep most of his Marines alive, but a Baneling push into the third killed most of aLive's SCVs at the same time that a Zergling line ran into his main. NesTea added Infestors to his Mutalisk and Banelings, a combination deadly to aLive's Marine and Siege Tank composition, forcing out aLive. Game 2, NesTea. The series is tied 1-1.
02:00: The semifinals are a best of 5, and aLive opened with a Hellion/cloaked Banshee combination against NesTea on Cloud Kingdom. Getting tanks and some marines, aLive pushed into NesTea's natural as the Zerg player attempted a Mutalisk transition. With careful Banshee micro and a strangle hold from aLive's Marines and Tanks, aLive was able to destroy both the natural hatchery and a macro hatch. NesTea was able to break out with some great Baneling and Mutalisk flanking, but aLive's Banshees were able to continue applying pressure. NesTea demonstrated fantastic Mutalisk tactics, allowing him to pull back into the game. aLive destroyed NesTea's third with a Marine/Tank group as Mutaslisks destroyed his own mineral lines, but a two Medivac drop in NesTea's main did serious damage before being cleaned up. The Marines and Siege Tanks were finally killed by an enormous amount of Banelines. aLive constantly denied expansions with groups of Marines and a Siege Tank or two, with the occasional drop to force a repositioning from NesTea's forces. Both players were on a mission to deny income from their opponents, with NesTea's Mutalisks killing off a ton of SCVs and aLive's army preventing NesTea from ever getting up a third and fourth base even past the 25 minute mark. By the 30 minute mark, neither player had managed to get up a third base for any stretch of time. Both players continue to trade armies in an offensive attempt by aLive to destroy NesTea's third base, and finally the game ended after a long and extremely unusual TvZ. Game 1, aLive!
23:50: NesTea won versus Stephano with 2:1, so he will play against aLive in winner brackets final.
23:40: In a very one sided and dominante game, aLive has won and therefore proceeded further to the next round of the winners bracket with the result of 2:1.
23:24: The score is 1:1 now, as we are heading to the third and final game on Daybreak. The third game is in progress.
23:10: aLive has just won his first game againt MKP on GSL Metropolis. He went for bio army vs mech and it proved to be the right choice as it gave him a lot of versatility. He was constantly putting pressure on MKP's expansions while making drops in the main base. The next game will start in a matter of seconds.
22:51: The aLive - MKP match is live now. Tune in to the stream and cheer for our Terran!
20:00: aLive had just won a epic thriller that was his match vs Polt. 2-1 is the score and MarineKing of Prime is his next opponent.
