\n

Avast! is an antivirus computer program developed by AVAST Software a.s. (formerly known as ALWIL Software a.s.), a company based in Prague, Czech Republic. It was first released in 1988. Avast! is based on a central scanning engine that is certified by ICSA Labs and West Coast Lab\'s Checkmark process and incorporates anti-spyware technology, also certified by West Coast Lab\'s Checkmark process, as well as anti-rootkit and self-protection capabilities. It is a multiple recipient of the Virus Bulletin VB100 Award for its detection of 100% of \"in-the-wild\" viruses, and is a past winner of the Secure Computing Readers\' Trust Award. The name Avast is derived from \"Anti-Virus – Advanced Set\". Its trademarked name is styled in all lower-case, and includes an exclamation mark.

\n

Avast! Free Antivirus is the freeware version of the Avast! antivirus software available to Microsoft Windows and Linux users, while Avast! Pro Antivirus is offered to businesses and users who want additional features. Priority updates are delivered automatically using PUSH update technology in Avast! Pro Antivirus. Avast! Pro Antivirus also has a command line scanner and a script blocker; however, in version 6, the script blocker is available to users of the free version.

\n

Avast! Antivirus is a widely used antivirus program, with 130 million users worldwide as of September 2010.

\n

\n

Features

\n

Antivirus kernel based on certified antivirus engine.

\n

Resident protection comprising individual modules or \"shields\", each of which can be individually configured or disabled:

\n

File System Shield — Real-time protection against viruses and other malware threats. Scans files as they run on your computer to keep viruses from being able to execute.

\n

Mail Shield  — Scans messages and attachments in E-mail/Microsoft Outlook/Exchange for viruses.

\n

Web Shield — HTTP protection (local transparent proxy). Version 4.8 also allows the blocking of URLs. Scans URLs and incoming data for viruses, and aborts connections to the site if one is found.

\n

P2P shield — Scans P2Pfiles from file share programs.

\n

IM shield — Instant Messaging protection. (Scanning of files transferred through instant messaging applications)

\n

Script blocker — Scans webpages for malicious scripts, and disables them from infecting your computer, though they can still be used. (for example, a clickable button)

\n

Network Shield — Basic protection against well-known network worms. Acts as an Intrusion Detection System.

\n

Behavior Shield — Reports suspicious behavior by analyzing the behavior of programs

\n

Anti-spyware capabilities

\n

Anti-rootkit capabilities

\n

Self-Protection — Prevents malware from terminating avast! processes and damaging avast! files.

\n

Automatic incremental updates — Updates of both the program and the virus database which is used to identify potential threats — Avast! updates its virus definitions on a regular basis (sometimes multiple updates daily) and this process is automated by default.

\n

Audible alarms — Vocal warnings and notices such as \"Caution, a virus has been detected!\" and \"Virus database has been updated.\"

\n

Boot-time scan — Users can schedule a boot-time scan to remove infections that load during Windows startup.

\n

Virus Chest — Quarantine; folder where infected files can be stored. The virus chest also stores vital system files to protect them from damage by malware. Users can also add their own files to the virus chest. Once in the chest, a file cannot be executed; double-clicking the file will instead display information about the file.

\n

SafeZone — SafeZone is special web browser in avast! Pro Antivirus 6.x and avast! Internet Security 6.x, which allows users to browse the web in a private, secure environment, invisible to the rest of the users\' system.

\n

WebRep browser plugin — WebRep is a community-based website reputation tool implemented in version 6.0 of Avast! Antivirus.

\n

\n

Customization

\n

Version 5 and version 6 of Avast! Antivirus allows its users to customize the voiceover played by the program whenever an event happens (such as the detection of malware, or whenever the program\'s database is updated). Official voiceovers are available in Belarusian, Brazilian Portuguese, Catalan, Chinese, English, French, German, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Ukrainian. Avast allows its users to submit voiceovers in different languages. Themed voiceovers are also available; these include \"Aussie\", \"Californian\", \"Canadian\", \"Pirate\" and \"Santa Claus\".

\n

Version 4 allowed users to customize its graphical user interface with different skins from the Avast! website.

\n

[edit]Registration

\n

The free version of Avast! Antivirus is only intended for personal, non-commercial use. After installation, the program can be used in trial mode for thirty days. This limit can be eliminated by registering using a form in Avast\'s website[11]. The program must then be re-registered every year.

\n

However, if a user has version 4.8 and upgrades to the latest version, then they are given an automatic 14-month license.

TuneUp Utilities 2011

\n

\n

http://k02.kn3.net/BC58108B7.jpg

\n

\n

TuneUp Utilities is a utility software suite for Microsoft Windows designed to help manage, maintain, optimize, configure and troubleshoot a computer system. It is produced and developed by TuneUp Software GmbH, headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany and co-founded by Tibor Schiemann and Christoph Laumann in 1997.[2][3] The American version of the software is distributed by TuneUp Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of TuneUp Software GmbH located in Miami, Florida.

\n

As of 2011, nine versions of TuneUp Utilities have been released and the number of included components have been increased from sixteen to thirty-two. TuneUp Utilities have attained generally positive reviews, although multiple reviewers did not approve of its price for value.

\n

\n

Features

\n

TuneUp Utilities 2011, the latest version of the product, consists of 30 different components, all of which can be accessed from within a central hub, called TuneUp Start Center. Most of these components can also be invoked from the Start menu. TuneUp Start Center itself can show the components either in a category view (default) or in a list view.

\n

\n

Status and recommendations

\n

The Status and recommendations category houses four sub-sections: 1-Click Maintenance, Performance Optimizer, Fix Problems and Live Optimization. The 1-Click Maintenance section runs multiple routine maintenance tools at once. The Performance Optimizer and Fix Problems utilities are intended to provide tips to identify and fix potential problems and increase performance, such as disabling unnecessary visual effects and disabling or removing unused Windows services and programs. Live Optimization, according to the application\'s author, is intended to improve the responsiveness of Windows applications by tweaking their execution priorities.

\n

\n

System Optimizations

\n

The Optimize system section includes TuneUp Program Deactivator, which unloads programs from memory and prevents their further automatic execution, an alternative to uninstalling them. While disabled programs continue to consume disk space, they no longer affect the startup time, the shutdown time and the system performance. Other components include a defragmentation tool, a registry cleaner, and a startup manager to replace MSConfig.

\n

\n

Disk cleanup

\n

The Gain disk space section itself is a disk cleanup component which replaces Windows Disk Cleanup. It also gives access to TuneUp Disk Space Explorer (a disk space analyzer) and TuneUp Shredder (a data erasure tool).

\n

\n

Troubleshooting tools

\n

The Fix problems section provides access to TuneUp Repair Wizard which allows users to selectively repair problems that TuneUp Utilities cannot automatically detect; e.g. icons getting corrupted or items like My Computer and Recycle Bin permanently vanished from Windows Desktop.

\n

Also in this category, there is TuneUp Disk Doctor. It can check the integrity of files stored on hard disk drives and salvage damaged files. It can also scan for physical defects known as bad sectors and isolate them. TuneUp Disk Doctor is a graphical replacement for Windows CHKDSK.

\n

Other items include a task manager, a system information tool and an undeletion tool.

\n

[edit]Windows customization

\n

The last section provides access to TuneUp Styler and TuneUp System Control. TuneUp System Control is a program that allows access to some of the obscure or harder-to-access settings of Microsoft Windows, similar to Tweak UI. TuneUp Styler allows for customization of the Windows user interface by changing the desktop appearance, icons, and the logon and startup screens.

\n

\n

Turbo Mode

\n

The Turbo Mode, accessible from the bottom of Start Center, gives system a performance boost by temporarily disabling some of Windows services and features of user\'s choice, such as Windows Aero themes and visual effects.

\n

\n

CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner), developed by Piriform is a donationware utility program used to clean potentially unwanted files and invalid Windows Registry entries from a computer.

\n

\n

Features

\n

CCleaner supports the cleaning of temporary or potentially unwanted files left by certain programs, including Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Safari, Google Chrome, Windows Media Player, eMule, Google Toolbar, Netscape, Microsoft Office, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip, and other applications[4] along with browsing history, cookies, Recycle bin, memory dumps, file fragments, log files, system caches, application data, autocomplete form history, and various other data.[5] The program also includes a registry cleaner to locate and correct problems in the Windows registry, such as missing references to shared DLLs, unused registration entries for file extensions, and missing references application paths.[4] As of v2.27, CCleaner can wipe the MFT free space of a drive, or the entire drive itself.

\n

CCleaner can be employed to uninstall programs. In addition, CCleaner allows the alteration of start-up programs, similar to the Microsoft Windows MSConfig utility. Users can disable start-up programs.[6] As of version 2.19.901, CCleaner also allows users to delete system restore points.
