It has been a few days since the last Starcraft 2 BLOG, and in that time, a lot has been going on in the beta! From new strategies, replays, frustrations, and defeated professional gamers. More details inside.

BLOG #2: Defeated Pro-Gamers and Replays - Cameron 'fams' Carson

I apologize for the long period in-between my blogs, it has been very hectic at FnaticMSI and in my personal life. So Ill get straight to it...
SC2 has shocked me on many levels, graphically, the physics of the game, the strategy and macro aspect, and just the overall functionality of some of the features (such as replays, which is what I want to talk to you about today)

Replays are an integral part of everyone’s game, players watch other players replays, and they study their own, all in the name of getting better. I think when Blizzard said that they were designing SC2 to be more ‘E-Sports orientated’ they had replays in mind when they said it.

Everyone remembers those crappy replays from Wc3 and SC:BW where you couldn’t rewind, and you had to restart the replay if you missed something. Not anymore, as most of you probably already know, SC2 has a rewind function which is incredibly useful.

Various options in the replay statistics

Now, that isn’t so mind blowing I know. However, as you can see in the Screen shot above, you will notice a list of options at the top left of the screen that come out of a drop box menu. These were tools you would have to download third party programs to view prior to this new battle.net.

Most appealing to myself, is the APM tracker, as I am constantly worried I am too slow and I lose many games because of it (which is true, I am very slow, and I do lose many games because of it).

These tools make studying your play so much easier, and give you a much clearer idea of what you need to improve on, what works, what doesn’t, and overall how you stack up Vs. your opponent.

Now I will go into a little detail about my laddering thus far as a new Zerg player.

As you know, I have been playing SC for a week now, and I must say, the strats are changing daily. One day in ZvZ the platinum and Gold players will attempt to go fast roaches (which is easily beatable by just going FE speed lings).

An early GG by me before I knew how to defeat fast Roaches

However a few days later, there is a new cheese build, where Zerg players will do a sunken rush with 8 lings. This makes the build I personally go, a definite loss in under 4 minutes as my spawning pool comes out late. So, by the time I get my pool up, 8 lings have just destroyed my expo and all of my drones leaving me dead in the water.

A similar point is playing Vs. Protoss. Specifically the change from a regular run of the mill zealot rush, followed up by zealots/stalkers. Now however, it seems every ‘good’ protoss player in Gold, uses the strategy that Duran ‘Xeris’ Parsi posted a couple of days ago in his SC2 blog.

Laddering, if you do not know the game (as in, units, tech trees, etc.) when you are a beginner such as myself, makes life rather difficult when laddering in Gold/Platinum. You might win 7 games straight, then lose 10 straight to the following builds. It all depends really.

I would like to finish on a positive note however. I am playing in Gold, Division 13. And a professional WoW player (Pookz of EG) is also in my division. I met up against him for the first time since noticing him in my division. And I smoked him. (In my next blog I will post a replay pack, in which his replay will be a part of : ) )
