The Fortnite World Cup was an incredible spectacle that young Jake "Smeef" Smith was proudly a part of. The Englishman is now back from New York so we caught up with him to find out what it was like competing in the incredible tournament.
Before we get into New York, the way you qualified for the tournament was pretty tense wasn't it? Can you tell us more about that?
It was an amazing moment. I had an unlucky couple games and a few unfortunate moments which meant I was 21 points away from qualification going into the last game. I dropped all pressure and managed to slay out a 22-point win (12 kills) and I was over the moon, full of laughter and joy.
How was the Fortnite World Cup overall as an experience? What was it like being in that huge stadium?
The world cup was amazing! Meeting everyone and being the reason were 25,000 people in the stadium feels so surreal. It was an unreal experience.
Tell us about what happened in-game, were you nervous before playing?
I was not nervous at all, this wasn't my first LAN. For some reason, I just had a terrible day and the zones were kind of against me but I try to blame myself before any of that. My decision making and rotates were 90% amazing with only a couple mistakes there however, my aim was just off and I don't know why, shots I missed literally cost me a top 10 placement so i will be working on that for sure.
Still at your age, winning $50,000 is incredible and you must be delighted with that?
It's good money of course but it's money of a top 100-21 solo player and I know I'm better than that. It feels like a huge wasted opportunity.
You also got to meet a lot of people in person for the first time, what was that like?
Meeting everyone was amazing, I didn't meet a single person I didn't like. Shoutout to OCE players like zoreh, parpy, sync, x2 twins, slaya and gheez because those guys are extra chill and I became friends with them all as soon as I met them.
You paid for your parents to travel to New York with you, what does their support mean to you? Have they been always been supportive of you gaming? Also, what do you think of their Twitter accounts?
They have always been supportive of me and it's amazing, it really makes a large difference that they allow me to pursue my dream and I wouldn't be where I am today without their encouragement. Their twitter accounts are great, they show their support to me online and are becoming pioneers to esports!
Finally, this is only the beginning for you and now you’ve had a taste of competing at the top level. How motivated are you following New York and what can we expect to see from you in the future?
I'm extremely motivated, I started working hard just 30 minutes after I walked in the door when I got back from NYC. I won't waste an opportunity like this again.
