HOW TO TRAVEL IN LONDON
π¬ Getting to London from the Airport:
- Heathrow: Heathrow Express (fast but expensive) or the regular underground tube Elizabeth line or Piccadilly Line (cheaper)
- Gatwick: Gatwick Express or regular trains
- Stansted/Luton: Direct trains to central London
Your main transport options in London:
- π The Underground (the 'Tube')
- Usually, the fastest way to get around London
- Runs roughly 5 AM - midnight (some lines have a night tube on weekends)
- π The Overground & National Rail
- Connects outer areas and some inner routes.
- Useful for reaching neighbourhoods not on the Tube
- π Buses
- London's iconic red buses run 24/7 on many routes.
- Great for short journeys and sightseeing
- Flat fare of Β£1.75 per journey, with unlimited transfers within 60 minutes
- π Docklands Light Railway (DLR) - driverless trains in East London
- π London Trams - mainly South London
- π₯οΈ River buses along the Thames - more scenic, slightly pricier though
π· How to pay:
- Contactless card or phone (Apple Pay / Google Pay)
- Oyster card (A card you can get at any ticket counter, which you can load with money and use to tap in and out when you travel)
- You donβt need paper tickets in most cases, unless you want to buy a ticket and travel outside of London
Note: You usually tap in and out for all transport options, except the bus. For buses, you only need to tap when you get on the bus, and then you can leave without tapping out again.
π± Useful apps to check your journey:
- Citymapper
- Google Maps
π‘ More tips:
- Make sure to ALWAYS tap out (except on buses), so you don't get charged extra
- Stand on the right side of escalators (stand right, walk left)
- Check what range of zones you're travelling to and from if you're buying an all-day travel card
- Tube lines have Northbound, Eastbound, Southbound and Westbound on their signs. Look out for these to make sure you get on the right train
- Check the final destination of a transport BEFORE you board to avoid travelling in the opposite direction you are planning to go to
- Allow extra time during rush hour and peak travel time (Mon-Fri from 6:30 AM - 9:30 AM and 4 PM - 7 PM)
- Off-peak vs peak travel prices are different
- If you're from the UK, try taking advantage of the National Rail Card for weekly & monthly Oyster passes
