Road to ALGS Part 2: Fnatic and the beginning of the Apex scene

⚫🟠 As you might know, Fnatic is today one of the dominant team in the Apex Legends esport scene, especially in the APAC North region. But did you know that the history between this game and the black and orange goes back to the beginnings of the game ?

↪️ Let's go back to 2019. Fortnite BR is one of the, if not the most, popular multiplayer game in the western ecosystem. So to absolutely no ones surprises, a lot of BR games would follow. The one that interest us here is obviously Apex Legends, made by Respawn Entertainement, edited by EA Games. New game you say ? Well, not totally : it's the spiritual heir to Titanfall 2 (which is really good, I recommend at least playing the solo part), which never was that popular but always had good reviews. For the Titanfall veterans, you'll find a lot of stuff, be it characters or weapons that will remind of you of your previous experience, just titanless 🤖

🏃 So the game is released on the 4th of February (who remembers the original King's Canyon map ?), and we can quickly see an esport scene grow and some tournaments organized themselves. Major problem in any BR games : the number of players. It's obviously harder to make a BR lan that a LoL one due to a game being 60 players (20 teams of 3), instead of 5vs5 for LoL or CSGO for example, and all the problems that can come with a new multiplayer game : lobby issues, connectivity problems etc etc.

🤝 Nonetheless, Fnatic joined the fight shortly after the release, assembling not one but two rosters : one in NA and one in EU, at the beginning of April.

EU roster was made of Dids 🇬🇧 N1KOLA 🇸🇪 , DcTzr 🇬🇧 shortly saw SmX 🇸🇪 (former Fnatic Heroes of the Storm player) joined as a team manager (he moved to the cs team quickly after) and finally Badoli ,🇩🇰 who joined in December. NA roster was made of 3 players from the USA 🇺🇸 : iShiny, Muffins (fun fact : those 2 are brothers), Cornpops at the start, the latest being replaced by Spirit when he retired in september of the same year.

🏆 Both rosters found some success, grabing some podium places in several events and making their way to the highest level of play (EA Preseason Invitational, EXP invitational, FACEIT Pro Series...), results ultimately weren't there, and coupled with the scene still being new and, one would say, a bit chaotic to follow, Fnatic decided to disband their 2 roster in April 2020, a bit more than a year after joining.

🚪But that wouldn't be the end of the Fnatic Apex division, which would see some talented players form a new roster in the APAC Region less than 3 years later. And we will talk of that tomorrow 👀

⚫🟠 ご存じかもしれませんが、 FnaticはApex Legendsシーン内で、特にAPAC North地域では最も強いチームの1つです。 では、Fnaticとこのゲームの歴史がゲームリリース当初まで遡ることはご存じでしょうか?

↪️2019年に戻ってみましょう。 西洋ではFortniteが最も有名なマルチプレイヤーゲームの1つでした。 なので勿論、 沢山のバトルロワイアルゲームがそれに続きました。 その中でも興味深かったのはRespawn制作、EA Games監修のApex Legendsでした。 新しいゲームかとお思いでしょうが、実はそうではありません。Apex Legendsは実はTitanfallの後継作品であり (とても面白いゲームなのでソロパートだけでもプレイすることをお勧めします)そこまで有名ではなかったのですがすごくいい評価を受けていました。 Titanfallを昔からプレイしている人は, キャラクターなり武器なり、以前経験したものとすごく近しい感覚を覚えるのではないでしょうか(ただタイタンがいないだけ))🤖

🏃 Apexは2月4日にリリースされ (最初期のキンキャニを覚えている人はいますか?), esportsシーンが大きく成長することは容易に想像できました。 バトロワゲーの大きな問題は1試合ごとのプレイヤーの数です。 5v5のゲームと違い60人(3人チームが20部隊)のプレイヤーが必要なので他のゲームよりもオフライン大会の開催が難しく、それに加え回線接続等の問題もあります。

🤝 何はともあれ、Fnaticはリリース後4月初頭にシーンに参戦しました。 1つではなく2つのロスターと契約 : 1つはEU、1つはNAです。

EUのロスターはDids 🇬🇧 N1KOLA 🇸🇪 , DcTzr 🇬🇧 、そしてSmX 🇸🇪 (以前FnaticのHeroes of the Storm部門→CS部門) がチームマネージャーとして加入し、 最後にBadoli ,🇩🇰 が12月に加入しました。 NAのロスターはアメリカ出身の3人で構成 🇺🇸 : iShiny, Muffins (面白いことに2人は兄弟です), 始めはCornpops, 後にSpiritが代わって加入しましたが、同年の9月に引退しました。

🏆 どちらのロスターもいくつかの大会で成功を収め、 最高レベルでの大会へと進みました (EA Preseason Invitational, EXP invitational, FACEIT Pro Series...) 。最終的に思うような結果は残せず、 シーンがまだ新しく、ある意味では少し追うのが難しかったこともあり、 参入から1年あまり、2020年の4月に両ロスターを解散する決断を下しました。

🚪しかしFnaticのApex部門はそこでは終わりません。3年経たずして、APAC地域の才能あるプレイヤーたちと新たなロスターを創り上げましたが、これについては明日お話していきましょう👀
